Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaged with them often enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive and even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they are also great companions for children.
Despite their adoring appearance they are loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud calls, which can be annoying to those living in apartments or condos.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are hard to tell apart. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases, and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it's important that the owner is patient and understands that this is not a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help correct any issues with behavior.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her an ancestor and plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and bond with their family members until death. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists across the country, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health
